Chapter 17

“Evaline!” the deep timber of Ulric’s voice echoed through the cavern.

Evaline spun around to find Ulric standing at the base of the staircase. His body filled the frame of the doorway. Golden yellow eyes set on her, glowing in this gloomy place. She hadn’t heard him coming at all, despite the silence of the tomb.

“The words… they’re the same,” she said, her voice low at first. Ulric walked closer. He was big enough to block the narrow walkway.

She glared at him. “Why didn’t you tell me? Yggdrasil is dying. It can’t help me. Why won’t you tell me anything?” she asked, her tone acidic with anger and hurt.

Ulric approached, and still, he said nothing.

She took a step away from him as he got closer. A flash of pain cut across his features. “What do the words say, Ulric?”

He looked down, not meeting her gaze, but he finally spoke, “It’s written in Old Norse, but in English, it translates to say, ‘Spill the blood of Life at the root of the World Tree, set fire to the curse, and burn away the disease.’ It’s the same prophecy that is written across all roots of the world tree, everywhere on Midgard. This is the curse that cut off Yggdrasil’s roots from the other realms, and closed the thresholds.”

A tear slipped down her face as she absorbed the meaning. Maddy had given her this fortune by using a drop of her blood, which she then burned. After the words had appeared, she had said it was her fate. It couldn’t all be a coincidence. These words were meant for her. “Am I the blood of life?”

Ulric spoke quietly, “Aye, I believe you are.”

She took another step back. How could she have been so stupid? Yggdrasil in Nordic myths was the tree that connects worlds. She’d had time to look it up while she was here. It was sick, and that’s why the threshold to Vanaheim was closed. Ulric had been giving her hints all along, but she’d been too preoccupied with his attention and her growing feelings for him to connect the dots. Was he just keeping her distracted this whole time?

Her stomach lurched. Did he mean to kill her to get back to his world? He and Galen had both said the demon king was weaker because the threshold was closed. Were they just waiting to kill him off before they could use her blood to get back home?

No wonder the demon king wanted her — he could regain his power if he could just kill her. It all made sense now.

Ulric was doing the same thing, except instead of sending terrifying demons after her, he’d just used a bit of charm and she’d fallen right into his lap. She was such a fool.

Ulric took a step towards her, his hand outstretched, and she took another back, but she collided with the trunk of Yggdrasil. The tree towered high above her, ominous with its crown of dead roots, but also exuding a great sorrow.
